The fat-blocking prescription drug Xenical (orlistat) causes 5.9 pounds or 2.9 percent more weight loss than placebo according to a new reveiw of previous studies.
Fifteen percent more patients lost at least 10 percent of their bodyweight than those taking placebo.
The review considered Xenical to be “modestly effective in promoting weight loss”.
The review included 11 studies.
Thirty-three percent of subjects dropped out of the studies according to the review.
