    Women require a minimum of 35 minutes of vigorous exercise or 80 minutes of moderate exercise daily to minimize weight regain according to a recent study.

    Thirty-two women who were an average of 38-years-old, had lost at least 26 pounds, had an average body mass index (BMI) of 24 were recruited within three months of reaching their target weight.

    Over the next year physically active women gained an average of 5.5 pounds, moderately active women gained 21.8 pounds, and sedentary women gained 15.4 pounds.

    The effects of exercise are not linear, but show a threshold-like effect at the minimum amounts of exercise stated above, according to the study.

    This means, for example, that 60 minutes of moderate exercise daily - or 75 percent of the minimum - does not provide 75 percent of the benefit as far as preventing weight regain.
