Ritalin (methylphenidate hydrochloride), a stimulant which blocks dopamine reuptake used for attention deficit disorder, increases resting metabolism by 7 percent more than placebo for three hours, and increases metabolism 5 percent following a meal according to a study by researchers at the University of Ottawa in Ontario, Canada. Studies have found that injecting dopamine increases resting metabolism 6-15 percent depending on the amount injected. The study involved 7 men and 7 women 19- to 37-years-old.
