The risk of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass weight loss surgery include “infrequent but serious surgical complications, eg, pulmonary embolism, intestinal leak, wound infection, and staple line failure; long-term deficiencies of iron, calcium, vitamin B12, and vitamin D; and the possibility of weight regain, [although the] benefits have been found to outweigh these risks,” according to a new review paper on weight loss surgery by George Blackburn from Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass.
