IT MAY SUGGESTS A NEW STUDY. A group of 465 people were interviewed twice 4 years apart. Those in the top one-third for saccharin consumption, consuming more than 28 grams per day, gained the most weight - on average 3.1 lbs. This does not prove the saccharin causes weight gain. It may be simply that people who are most likely to gain weight also consume the most saccharin-sweetened foods. It would be interesting to see a long-term study to determine if saccharin is as beneficial as NutraSweet for weight loss and weight maintenance. (Also see ?Does NutraSweet help with weight loss?? and other articles on saccharin’s effect on metabolism.)
