The risk of stroke increases as weight increases, at least in women, according to a study that followed 439,582 Korean women for 13 years. Being overweight (BMI 25-26.4) increases the risk of stroke 1.9-fold, and being obese (BMI 30-31.9) increases the risk 3-fold in women under the age of 50. In women over 50, the risk also increased, although to a lesser extent; being overweight increases the risk 1.3-fold, and being obese increases the risk 1.6-fold.
