    Splenda (sucralose) reduces good bacteria in the gut

    Splenda, the artificial sweetener containing sucralose, reduces good bacteria in the gut according to a rat study done by researchers from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, USA.

    Hobbs: Good bacteria in the gut are very beneficial and necessary for good health.

    "Evidence indicates that a [3 month] administration of Splenda exerted numerous adverse effects," the researchers concluded. Bacteria Affected

    Decrease in anaerobes, bifidobacteria, lactobacilli, Bacteroides, clostridia, and total aerobic bacteria

    After 3 months, there was a decrease the numbers of total anaerobes, bifidobacteria, lactobacilli, Bacteroides, clostridia, and total aerobic bacteria, however, there was no effect on enterobacteria.

     

    What are Anaerobes?

    Anaerobes make up 95-99% of gut bacteria

    “Anaerobes are present in large numbers in the intestine [and make up] 95-99% of total bacterial mass” according to Microbiology and Immunology on-line from the University of South Carolina.

     

    What is Bifidobacteria?

    Bifidobacteria aid in digestion, reduces allergies and prevents some forms of tumor growth

    “Bifidobacteria are one of the major genera of bacteria that make up the gut flora, the bacteria that reside in the colon,” according to Wikipedia.

    “Bifidobacteria aid in digestion, are associated with a lower incidence of allergies and also prevent some forms of tumor growth.”

     

    What is Lactobacillus?

    Lactobacillus produces lactic acid which inhibits growth of bad bacteria

    “Lactobacillus… are a major part of the lactic acid bacteria group, named as such because most of its members convert lactose and other sugars to lactic acid,” according to Wikipedia.

    “They are common and usually benign. In humans they are present in the vagina and the gastrointestinal tract, where they are symbiotic and make up a small portion of the gut flora.”

    “The production of lactic acid makes its environment acidic which inhibits the growth of some harmful bacteria.”

     

    What are Bacteroides?

    Bacteroides prevent bad bacteria from growing in the gut

    “Bacteroides are normally mutualistic, making up the most substantial portion of the mammalian gastrointestinal flora, where they play a fundamental role in processing of complex molecules to simpler ones in the host intestine,” according to Wikipedia.

    “Bacteroides species also benefit their host by excluding potential pathogens from colonizing the gut.”

     

    What is Clostridia?

    Clostridia may help in treatment of cancer

    “Non-pathogenic strains of clostridia may help in the treatment of diseases such as cancer. Research shows that clostridia can selectively target cancer cells,” according to Wikipedia.

     

    What is Enterobacteria?

    Enterobacteria is bad bacteria in the gut

    Enterobacteria is considered bad bacteria in the gut.

    Comment: Two-thirds of the dry weight of the stool is made up of bacteria.

    Thus reducing good bacteria in the gut could cause diarrhea and allow for the overgrowth of bad bacteria.

    Splenda (sucralose) gave me a headache, fatigue and diarrhea.

    Surely, anything that gives causes headache, diarrhea and fatigue is not good for us.
