Forskolin does not cause weight loss or fat loss in overweight women

A previous study found that an herbal extract of coleus forskohlii which contained 10% forskolin caused overweight and obese men to lose fat and gain muscle, however, a study from Baylor University found that forskolin does not cause weight loss in overweight women.
There was virtually no change in percent body fat or the amount of muscle in women after three months of taking forskolin.
"Results suggest that [coleus forskohlii] does not appear to promote weight loss but may help mitigate weight gain in overweight females with apparently no clinically significant side effects," the paper concluded. Subjects
Subjects: 19 overweight and obese women
The study involved 19 overweight and obese women, 18- to 40-years-old, with an body mass index (BMI) of 25-35.
Dose: 250 mg with 10% forskolin twice a day
The women were given capsules containing either a placebo or 250 mg of coleus forskohlii extract which contained 10 percent forskolin.
They were instructed to take two capsules per day, one in the morning and one in the evening, 30 minutes before a meal.
3 month study
The study lasted three months.
Percent Body Fat: End of study vs beginning of study: 41.6% vs 41.8%
There was no decrease in percent body fat.
After taking forskolin for three months, the women had 41.6 percent body fat versus 41.8 percent when they started the study.
Lean Body Mass
Lean Body Mass: End of study vs beginning of study: 98.3 lbs vs 98.2 lbs
There was virtually no change in lean body mass (muscle) in the women taking forskolin.
They had 98.2 pounds of lean body mass when the study started versus 98.3 pounds when the study ended.
