Black women have a lower metabolism and lose less weight than white women according to a recent study.
Resting metabolism was found to be 6 percent lower before weight loss in black women than white women after adjusting for body weight (1576 versus 1679 calories per day, respectively).
After following a diet of 925 to 1,025 calories per day for four to five months black women had lost 6.6 pounds less than white women (29.5 pounds versus 36.1 pounds, respectively).
This represented 14 percent of body weight for black women compared to 17 percent for white women.
Resting metabolism also dropped half again as much in black women following weight loss as in white women even though they started with a lower metabolism and lost less weight (-9.9 percent versus -6.3 percent, respectively).
The study involved 24 black and 85 white obese women with an average body mass index (BMI) of 36.3, an average body weight of 211 pounds, and an average age of 42-years.
