"[T]here is no evidence that diet prevents cardiovascular morbidity or mortality," noted Uffe Ravnskov, MD, PhD.
"This effect was shown in a systematic review of eight ecological, 41 cross-sectional, 25 cohort, six case-control studies, and a meta-analysis of nine controlled randomised dietary trials."
This is a quote from a Letter to the Editor published in the Lancet in 2000.

40 studies of Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs Not Including Statins
40 studies of Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs Not Including Statins Show a GREATER Number of Deaths in Those Taking These Drugs
“Before the introduction of the new cholesterol lowering drugs, the statins, more than 40 trials have been performed to test if cholesterol-lowering can prevent a heart attack. In some of the trials the number of fatal heart attacks were lowered a little, in other trials the number of fatal heart attacks increased.
“Overviews of the trials have shown that when all results were taken together, just as many died in the treatment groups (e.g. those whose cholesterol was lowered) as in the untreated control group (78,79). The following table gives the accumulated results. None of the differences were statistically significant. Nor were they by more sophisticated analyses.
Greater Number of Total Deaths in Those Given These Drugs vs Placebo
Greater Number of Total Deaths in Those Given These Drugs vs Placebo: 6.1% vs 5.8%
“[The total deaths in the drug groups was 6.1% versus 5.8% in the placebo group.]
“[The rate of fatal heart attacks was the same in those given these drugs versus those given a placebo: 2.9% versus 2.9%.]
Some Overviews of These Drugs IGNORE the Some of the Negative Trials
Some Overviews of These Drugs Have Reported Positive Results by IGNORING Some of the Negative Trials
“That some overviews have shown a positive result after cholesterol-lowering is because they had ignored or excluded one or more trials with a negative outcome (79).
Statins Do NOT Work by Lowering Cholesterol
Some Statin Trials Show Positive Results, But Statins Also INCREASE CANCER
“The mentioned overviews included mostly diet and/or the older cholesterol-lowering drugs. But a new type of drugs, the statins (for instance Zocor, Mevacor, Lescol, Lipitor and Pravachol) have been succesful. However, their effect isn´t exerted through cholesterol-lowering, they have other and more useful properties Unfortunately they also stimulate cancer growth.”
