"The second part of this book will present the way of thinking about obesity and excess fat that European medical researchers came to accept just prior to the Second World War. They argued, as I will, that it is absurd to think about obesity as caused by overeating, because anything that makes people grow -- whether in height or in weight, in muscle or in fat -- will make them overeat," Gary Taubes writes in his excellent book Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It.
“Children, for example, don’t grow taller because they eat voraciously and consume more calories than they expend,” Taubes continues.
“They eat so much—overeat—because they’re growing.
“They need to take in more calories than they expend.
“The reason children grow is that they’re secreting hormones that make them do so—in this case, growth hormone.
“And there is every reason to believe that the growth of our fat tissue leading to overweight and obesity is also driven and controlled by hormones.”
CommentComment: Hormones, specifically insulin, causes us to overeat
What he is saying here is people do NOT overeat because of a lack of will power, but rather that hormones—specially insulin—drives us to overeat.
He does a great job explaining how insulin does this—why we are fat because of insulin which is driven by eating carbohydrates.
This is a MUST-READ Book
This is MUST-READ book for anyone interested in body weight
This is MUST-READ book for anyone interested in body weight… or anyone who believes that saturated fat is bad for you… or anyone who believes that carbohydrates are good for you… or anyone who believes that obesity is caused by a lack of will power… or anyone who believes that obesity is caused by eating too much and exercising too little (yes, of course this is true, but this does not answer the question as to why people eat too much and exercise too little, which Taubes answers in this book).
I highly recommend this book.
Gary Taubes is an excellent science journalist.
His previous books include “Good Calories, Bad Calories”, a longer book which is also about low-carb diets, but is a much longer book.
