A drug called Empatic, which is simply a combination of sustained-release Zonegran (zonisamide) plus sustained-release Wellbutrin SR (bupropion), with a minimal amount of diet and exercise caused a weight loss of 5-10 percent after six months for people who completed the study compared to one percent for those given a placebo according to a press release from Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc, the company who is developing the drug. Weight Loss According to Dose
Weight loss varied from 5-10%
The most effective dose was 360 mg of sustained-release Zonegran (zonisamide) plus 360 mg of sustained-release Wellbutrin SR (bupropion) which caused an average weight loss of 10.3 percent.
The lowest doses tested were 120 mg of sustained-release Zonegran (zonisamide) plus 280 mg of sustained-release Wellbutrin SR (bupropion) which caused an average weight loss of 5.3 percent.
The weight loss according to the various doses were as follows:
Weight Loss After 6 Months (24 weeks) | |||
---|---|---|---|
Group | Zonegran SR | Wellbutrin SR | Completers |
Group 1 | 120 mg | 280 mg | 5.3% |
Group 2 | 120 mg | 360 mg | 7.3% |
Group 3 | 240 mg | 280 mg | 7.2% |
Group 4 | 240 mg | 360 mg | 7.4% |
Group 5 | 360 mg | 280 mg | 8.3% |

Comment: Phentermine plus Zonegran probably better
Based on what a couple of doctors have told me, Zonegran (zonisamide) plus phentermine is probably a more effective combination than the Zonegran (zonisamide) plus Wellbutrin (bupropion) being used in the drug Empatic. Wellbutrin (bupropion) is simply not very effective at causing weight loss, but phentermine is.
See the article about how Dr. Jay Piatek uses Zonegran (zonisamide) plus phentermine.
