Phen-Pro, the combination of phentermine plus Prozac (fluoxetine), caused a similar amount of weight loss as Phen-Fen, the combination of phentermine plus fenfluramine, but the dropout rate was twice as high according to a study from researchers at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. Weight Loss
Weight Loss : Phen-Pro vs Phen-Fen : 13.3% vs 14.4%; 32.6 lbs vs 38.9 lbs
Patients given Phen-Pro lost an average of 13.3 percent of body weight or 32.6 pounds, dropping from 246 pounds to 214 pounds compared to an average of 14.4 percent or 38.9 pounds for those given Phen-Fen, dropping from 277 pounds to 238 pounds.
Dropouts twice as high in Phen-Pro group as Phen-Fen group
The dropout rate in patients taking Phen-Pro was:
- 29% after 3 months
- 56% after 6 months
- 82% after one year
The dropout rate in patients taking Phen-Fen was:
- 9% after 3 months
- 28% after 6 months
- 44% after one year
Dropouts : One-out-of-eight due to side effects
Thirteen percent of patients in both the Phen-Pro group and Phen-Fen groups—one out of every eight patients—dropped out due to side effects.
Doses : Phentermine 37.5 mg plus 20 mg of Prozac or 60 mg fenfluramine
Patients were started on 18.75 mg of phentermine plus 20 mg of Prozac (fluoxetine) or Pondamin (fenfluramine).
The dose of Pondamin (fenfluramine) was then usually raised to 40 mg and then to 60 mg.
Then the dose of phentermine was usually increased to 37.5 mg per day.
Doses : 1.5 tables of phentermine on rare occasions
“On rare occasions, phentermine would be increased to 1.5 tablets per day (56.25 mg) if the patient had responded to the initial increase in phentermine,” the authors noted.
Subjects : 21 on Phen-Pro, 98 on Phen-Fen, 26 on no diet pills
The study involved 21 patients who were given Phen-Pro, data from 98 patients who had been given Phen-Fen in the past, and 26 patients who were never treated with diet pills.
Conclusion : Phen-Pro causes as much weight loss as Phen-Fen, but dropout rate is much higher
“There were no differences in weight loss between the two combinations in patients who completed 6 months of treatment, but there was a much higher dropout rate in the [Phen-Pro] group,” the authors concluded.
“Blood pressure and serum lipids demonstrated significant improvements with both combinations. The weight losses and improvements in cardiovascular risk achieved in our trial give encouragement that additional, larger trials with [Phen-Pro] combination would be useful.”
