Men who consume more than 3 alcoholic drinks per day have more belly fat

Men who consume 3 or more drinks per day -- 21 or more drinks per week -- have larger waists and more belly fat than men who are light drinkers or those who do not drink at all according to a new study from Royal Free and University College Medical School in London, England. Beer and liquor more strongly associated with belly fat than wine

The association was more clearly seen in men who drank beer and hard liquor than those who drank wine, although wine was still associated with a larger waist and more belly fat also.

Conclusion

“Higher alcohol consumption (>/=21 units/week) is positively associated with general and to a greater extent with central adiposity, irrespective of the type of drink and whether the alcohol is drunk with meals or not,” the researchers concluded.

Subjects: 3327 men, 60-79 years-old in Britain

The study analyzed data from 3327 men from general practices in twenty-four British towns, aged 60- to 79-years-old with no history of heart attack, stroke or diabetes.
