    Type 2 diabetics given once-a-week Byetta injections lose 8.4 lbs in four months

    Type 2 diabetics who were injected once-a-week with with 2 mg of long-acting release Byetta lost an average of 8.4 pounds after 3.75 months (15 weeks) according to a recent study from researchers at Amylin Pharmaceuticals, the makers of the drug. Patients given a dose of 0.8 mg once a week or a placebo did not lose weight. The long-acting release formula is under development by Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in San Diego, California, USA.

    Eating whole-grain breakfast cereals lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes according to a study from researchers at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.     According to the Nurses Cohort Study from the US, female nurses who were overweight, that is had a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or more, increased the risk of type 2 diabetes 5-fold, while having a BMI of 35 or more, severe obesity, increased the risk 93-fold notes the report Storing Up Problems: The Medical Case for a Slimmer Nation by the Royal College of Physicians. They note that this could help to explain why poor people are more likely to be obese in developed countries.

    Weight loss of 1% for type 2 diabetics reduces health care costs by $256 per year

    In type 2 diabetics, a weight loss of one percent of body weight reduced total health care costs by an average of 3.6 percent or $256 per year and diabetes-related costs by 5.8 percent or $131 per year. This according to a study of data from a health maintenance organization (HMO) for the period from July 1, 1997 through October 31, 2005.

    Sleep apnea may double the risk of diabetes

    Sleep apnea may increase the risk of diabetes 2-fold according to a new study from Sweden. Severely obese subjects who lost weight, but continued to have sleep apnea were twice as likely to develop diabetes, and 1.9 times as likely to develop elevated triglycerides than those who got rid of their sleep apnea.

    Topamax plus metformin helped diabetics lose 6.5% of their body weight

    Type 2 diabetics taking metformin (Glucophage) and Topamax (topiramate) lost 4.5 to 6.5 percent of their body weight after one year compared to 1.7 percent for those taking only metformin (Glucophage) according to a large study from the Medical University in Graz, Austria.
